World Environment Day Marks 50th Anniversary with Focus on Plastic Pollution Solutions
June 5, 2023
World Environment Day, the annual global event
dedicated to environmental protection, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this
year. Falling on Monday, June 5, this significant milestone serves as a
reminder of the importance of raising awareness and taking action to safeguard
our planet.
World Environment Day serves as a powerful platform for global outreach, engaging millions of individuals worldwide. This year, the theme revolves around finding solutions to the pressing issue of plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution. Côte D'Ivoire has been chosen as the host country for the commemoration.
The Netherlands government has pledged its support for this year's World Environment Day. Recognized as a nation actively involved in tackling plastic pollution throughout its lifecycle, the Netherlands is a signatory of the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment and a member of the Global Partnership on Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter.
The origins of World Environment Day trace back to the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1973, where it was first observed. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this initiative aimed to unite people worldwide in the mission to protect and restore our Earth. The inaugural theme, "Only One Earth," highlighted the need to preserve our planet for future generations.
The alarming statistics provided by the United Nations emphasize the urgency of addressing plastic pollution. Annually, over 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced globally, with only a meager 10 percent being recycled. A staggering 19-23 million tonnes of plastic enter lakes, rivers, and seas each year, with microplastics infiltrating our food, water, and air. Shockingly, individuals consume over 50,000 plastic particles per year, with even higher quantities if inhalation is taken into account.
To combat the devastating effects of plastic pollution and mitigate global warming, it is imperative that greenhouse gas emissions are halved by 2030. Failure to take action will result in a 50 percent increase in air pollution exposure beyond safety guidelines within the decade and a tripling of plastic waste in aquatic ecosystems by 2040. The urgency of the situation demands immediate and comprehensive measures.
Governments, companies, and all stakeholders are urged to scale up and expedite actions to address this crisis. Utilizing available scientific knowledge and solutions, collective efforts are essential to overcome this pressing environmental challenge.
On this World Environment Day, let us unite in the battle against plastic pollution and commit to creating a sustainable future for generations to come.
